Statement

Are angels and demons real?

Theology about each character in ancient times, as they relate to the Heavenly hierarchy, has always been of interest to me.  As I reflect on the world that we live in today and my own life experiences, I am reminded that there are many parallels between the natural world and the ethereal.  The existence of fire breathing demons and angels with golden wings is up for debate.  In my work I aim to explore the relationship between angels and demons in the human form.  Examining the crossover between the two.

There are people in this world that seem to be as close as you can get to being an angel on Earth.  However, sometimes their personal agendas are kept hidden. There are also people in this world that do terrible things, does that mean they are terrible people? If we are all born an angel, who is to blame?

My work functions as a cathartic introspection of trauma and abuse.  In sharing my story more openly and expressing my emotions through my work, I gain confidence and validation which allows me the space to heal.  I paint images of dramatic lighting and dynamic movement in the fabric veiling a figure to elicit a similar sense of inspiration to the viewer.  Showing glimpses of the figure in each piece gives it a sense of humanity and relatability.  While also retaining ambiguity, allowing the viewer to form their own opinions on what they see, what it means and how it makes them feel.

For this collection I wanted to be the figure under the fabric, as this is a personal topic. I had the pleasure of collaborating with Camille de Ganon (a dear friend, former professional dancer, and photographer) on the source images for these works. She was able to capture my movements and dynamic vantage points to help convey my message.
